In this program, students explore the science of watersheds. In the lab, students learn scientific techniques as they perform a fish dissection, conduct water chemistry tests, and discover potential sources of pollution. In addition, students will learn about the hydrologic cycle and what lives in a watershed. Onboard the R\/V Sea Explorer, students form research teams to test the offshore nutrient levels, complete a bio assessment of the sea floor habitat, and examine the local plankton population. Students learn about the hydrologic cycle and what lives in a watershed. A hands-on demonstration with a model of a watershed shows how humans impact our fragile environment. The program drives home why everyone needs to understand how we all affect our local watersheds.<\/span><\/p>\n

        Sleeping Arrangements<\/h4>\n

        For our overnight programs, students and adults sleep in a private section of our facility called the Surf Deck. <\/span>All students and adults sleep in this room. Students sleep on the ground with sleeping bags or blankets (we do not provide) on surfboard shaped padded mats. Adults sleep on the lifted platform beds (total of six, any additional will sleep on floor) that also have a padded mat. An Ocean Institute instructor will sleep in the adjoining room. The curtain in the middle gets lowered to divide girls and boys on separate sides of the room.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
